Several of you have graciously asked for our son Adam's address in Africa, in order to send him a Christmas card. Let me say, first of all, that we are very, very moved by your desire to do so! (Adam, as most of you know, is a Peace Corps Volunteer in the west Africa country of Burkina Faso, teaching math and science to middle-school age children). However, Adam's particular situation doesn't lend itself easily to correspondence by letter, and I feel I must explain. First and foremost, there is no mail delivery to his village. All mail goes to Peace Corps headquarters, and must await his infrequent visits to the capital city, or a visit to him from his Peace Corps supervisor. It takes usually a month to six weeks for him to receive mailed items. Also, we have recently learned that a variety of factors sometimes interrupts mail service into Burkina Faso. Secondly, though the postal rate for an airmail letter (80 cents for 1 oz, $1.55 for 2 oz) is relatively inexpensive by overseas standards, even cards and letters must be mailed from a U.S. Post Office with a Customs Declaration form attached (stating that there is nothing of monetary value enclosed). Therefore, please let me suggest two alternatives: |
|
1. If you would like to send Adam a Christmas, Hanukkah, or New Year's card, or a note or letter, please seal it in an envelope, address it (see below), and bring it to church and put it in the box in the foyer. Do not put any postage on in! About January 2, Judy and I will mail them all to him as a package. (Please do not send anything of monetary value; only letters, cards, messages, etc). His address is: |
|
Adam Cohen, PCV |
| S/C Corps de la Paix |
| 01 B.P. 6031 |
| Ouaguadougou 01, Burkina Faso |
| 2. Adam has a webpage: http://www.adaminafrica.blogspot.com . Go to that page on your computer and peruse what he has to say (with photos) There is a link you can click in order to send him an e-mail message, if you wish. |
| Again, thank you so much for your interest. Christmas 2005 will indeed be different for Judy and me without Adam at our Christmas table! We know it will be a new experience for him, also. Burkina Faso is a predominantly Muslim and African tribal religion country, so his Christmas celebration will be, hopefully, with other American Peace Corps Volunteers. |

P.S.
We also want to remember
Brian
Becknell,
grandson of Ray and Jackie Becknell, who is deployed with the 101st
Airborne division in Iraq. Cards and letters to him require
only regular U.S. postage (37 cents for 1 oz, 60 cents for 2 oz ...
until January 1, then 39 cents for 1 oz) with no Customs Declaration
form. His address is: |
| PFC Becknell - Brian |
| C-CO 1-187 3BCT |
| FOB Summerall |
| APO AE0949 |
| In addition to your cards and letters, keep Brian and all our service men and women who are serving our country in your prayers in the coming days. Pray that they will be safe ... and pray that "the days will be accomplished" when "the things that make for peace" will find fulfillment. |
